A team of Ethiopian experts from the Refugee Registration and Documentation Service, Immigration and Citizenship Service, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully concluded a four-day study visit to Switzerland.
The visit, organized by the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration, focused on the theme of “Integrated Border Management.”
During the visit, the delegation explored Switzerland’s advanced land and air border management systems. They also visited an asylum seekers’ centre, gaining first-hand knowledge of the country’s asylum procedures and operational practices.
The visit provided the Ethiopian experts with valuable insights to strengthen Ethiopia’s border and migration management systems.
At the conclusion of the visit, the team briefed Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, on their findings and experiences. The briefing underscored the significance of the knowledge gained and its potential to enhance Ethiopia’s migration governance.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Addis Ababa office and the migration section of the Swiss Embassy in Addis Ababa were key partners in facilitating this initiative, highlighting the collaborative nature of the visit.
The visit reflects the growing bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Switzerland, particularly in migration management and institutional cooperation. The delegation emphasized that the experience was an invaluable step towards modernizing Ethiopia’s border and migration systems.
