H.E. Ambassador Tsegab, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN delivered a statement at the 115th Session of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Council taking place in Geneva from November 26-28, 2024.
In his remarks H.E. Ambassador Tsegab outlined the various initiatives Ethiopia has undertaken to ensure that migration remains safe, regular, and orderly. He stated that regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national level take place in collaboration with IOM. He also informed the Council the bilateral labor agreements which Ethiopia has signed with Middle Eastern and other countries to facilitate safe, regular, and orderly migration pathways.
Ambassador Tsegab also addressed significant challenges, such as irregular migration, human trafficking, and mass deportations, particularly affecting Ethiopian migrants in the Middle East. Additionally, recognizing climate mobility as a key focus area for IOM programming, he underlined the urgent need to address displacement caused by climate change through effective interventions that build resilience in vulnerable communities.
The Permanent Mission is representing Ethiopia in the IOM Council, which is the highest authority of the IOM. The Council meets in regular session once a year and in special sessions.
