The Ethiopian delegation, led by H.E. Belete Molla (PhD), Minister of Innovation and Technology, participated in the 68th Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference from September 16-20, 2024, held in Vienna, Austria.

In his address, the Minister emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to utilizing nuclear science and technology for sustainable development. He commended IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi for his initiatives that promote peaceful nuclear applications, highlighting programs such as “Rays of Hope,” “ZOODIAC,” and the “Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship Program.” He also expressed excitement for the upcoming “Atom 4 Food” initiative, aimed at enhancing food security through nuclear techniques, and assured the IAEA of Ethiopia’s full cooperation in its implementation.

Additionally, the Minister announced the establishment of a Center for Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST) to manage the nuclear sector effectively and discussed the need for technical cooperation with the IAEA to expand radiotherapy centers in response to the rising cancer burden in Ethiopia.

In a separate session during the Conference, Ethiopia took over the chairmanship of the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) for the 2024-25 period. The delegation, which also included members of the Permanent Mission of Ethiopia, also had a bilateral discussion with Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of IAEA, and agreed to work closely to further strengthen their collaboration.
