The second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) commenced on July 22 at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, and continue to be held until August 2, 2024.
On the second day of the general debate, the Permanent Mission of Ethiopia, represented by Mr. Lisanework Gorfu, delivered a statement reaffirming its support for complete nuclear disarmament. Mr. Lisanework emphasized that the NPT is the cornerstone of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, stressing the urgent need for the total, irreversible, and legally binding elimination of nuclear weapons. He highlighted Ethiopia’s commitment to these principles and called for an early agreement on a legally binding instrument to assure non-nuclear-weapon States against the use or threat of nuclear weapons.
He further underscored Ethiopia’s efforts in nuclear safety and security, including recent agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These agreements demonstrate Ethiopia’s dedication to nuclear safety and security. He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to collaborating closely with the IAEA and other international partners to promote peaceful nuclear technology and achieve a nuclear weapons-free world.
